Merle Haggard Health Update

December 22, 2015 By NashStar

merle-haggard-healthThe first time the “Django and Jimmie” tour was postponed it was due to health concerns regarding Willie. Even though it wasn’t life threatening, Willie and his management team didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks. But now the second setback has struck, leaving his outlaw partner, Merle Haggard, out of action.

Just recently Haggard was released from the Eisenhower Medical Center after being hospitalized on the 5th of December. At that point nobody knew what was going on and Haggard admits he was closer to death than he anticipated. He was initially diagnosed with pneumonia, but the severity of his condition made everyone think his lung cancer had returned. As a long time smoker of tobacco and marijuana, Haggard quit both during the mid-nineties. However, an interview with Rolling Stone in 2009 suggested that he picked up the marijuana habit again.

For the most part Haggard hasn’t had many health issues and apart from undergoing surgery in 1995 for clogged arteries, his biggest challenge came in November 2008. He was diagnosed with lung cancer and a section of his lung had to be removed. Luckily for Haggard, the surgery was successful and none of the cancer was left. But as doctors observed the condition he was in they didn’t throw out the possibility of the cancer returning. To everyone’s relief this wasn’t the case and as it turns out Haggard suffered from double pneumonia, which explained his near-death experience.

As it stands Haggard is recovering nicely, but there is no telling when the tour is going to continue. In fact, he’s just willie-nelson-mergle-haggard-django-jimmie-coverhappy that he’ll get to see another Christmas. When taking into account that Nelson is 82 and Haggard 78, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some health issues are going to make touring more difficult. It’s also interesting to note that the venues they have chosen for this specific tour are much larger than the ones they used for their solo shows in the past, informing the fans that they want to go big this time around.

The “Django and Jimmie” tour was scheduled two months after releasing their sixth collaborative album by the same name. These two outlaws have been playing together for more than thirty years and fans will recognize the big start to their collective career as “Pancho and Lefty”. More notably, they stuck to their guns when country was facing a heavy influence from the pop genre by doubling up on everything with a twang.

Now, after thirty years they are still capable of recording an album that quickly went into the charts while receiving praise from fans and critics alike. The title of the 14 track album “Django and Jimmie” is also a song that pays tribute to Django Reinhardt and Jimmie Rodgers.

Whether Haggard will be healthy enough to continue the tour can only be speculated, but as everyone knows this legendary musician never goes down without a fight. Chances are he’ll come back in the New Year playing better than ever. But until then everyone is wishing him the best as he makes a full recovery.

I Got The Boy – Jana Kramer

December 22, 2015 By NashStar

The “I Got The Boy” music video featuring the beautiful Jana Kramer is as sentimental as they come, and although it’s not perfect, you can’t stop watching. For those who haven’t had the liberty of seeing this music video yet, this is what you can expect.

Jana-Kramer---I-Got-The-Boy--feature

As the first notes of the music start to play the camera settles on an old box being opened by Kramer. She is sitting in the middle of a semi-empty room, obviously reminiscing about the past. Kramer looks absolutely gorgeous despite her casual attire and she proves why she is the spokesperson for Pure Silk shaving cream. Inside the box are various items, but the most prominent objects have to be the old love letters, given to her by the “boy” she loved several years before.

There are only two transitions the video makes, both of them putting Kramer in more formal clothes and shot in different locations of the house. The last is where she stands on the balcony overlooking a beautiful image of trees and grass covered in snow. The only real connection between the song and the video is the first scene with the box, but other than that it doesn’t really speak to what happens. After the first five seconds or so the viewer expects to see a “younger” Kramer having fun with her boyfriend, followed by the new woman in his life. However, the shot stays on Kramer and in the here-and-now.

Make no mistake, Kramer is great to look at and her acting skills really help to bring out the emotions of the song. But it won’t be far-fetched to think that the video could’ve had more power if more people were used to emphasize the beautiful words. Instead, the director Kristin Barlowe kept things simple, maybe because it’s a different way of bringing attention to the song itself. Kramer and Barlowe have worked together before so they are both probably happy regarding the finished product.

Jana-Kramer---I-Got-The-Boy--legs-crossed

With Kramer’s low, yet sultry voice you’d think she had more albums behind her name, but this single comes from her second album, following a three year gap from her first self-titled release. This could be that her main focus has always been towards television. After participating in various small roles in several well-known shows, One Tree Hill is the show where she settled with a more permanent character.

In terms of this beautiful song, many will be surprised to know that Jamie Lynn Spears had a big hand in writing it along with Tim Nichols and Connie Harrington. Spears initially wanted to keep the song for herself, but in an interview she said it was recorded by the right person. The single is currently making its way up the Billboard Country Chart and nobody can argue why it’s so popular.

Jana-Kramer---I-Got-The-Boy--on-couch

Maybe the video could’ve been stronger and maybe there was room for a few extra scenes, but few women look as gorgeous on screen. If there is one country singer who can keep everyone’s attention just by smiling, it’s Jana Kramer.

Little Big Town All Around

April 2, 2015 By NashStar

Little Big Town released their first album in 2002, but it wasn’t until 2005 with their second album, “The Road to Here”, that they reached their success. However, 2014 has been their pinnacle in terms fame and fortune. Their latest single “Day Drinking” has out-performed all their former releases and the vocal group keeps moving from strength to strength.

The “Pain Killer” tour was launched on the 8th of November in Youngstown, Ohio, and will continue until the 13th December in Rockford, Illinois. Thirteen cities are booked for the tour and they will be accompanied by Brett Eldredge and Brothers Osborne, who will handle the opening acts. Upon announcing the tour they also showcased the cover art for the new album which was released in late October. Fans will be glad to know that this time around they are selling special VIP packages for the tour, giving them more time with the band.

Among the surprises that graced Little Big Town over the year, one of the biggest happened at the Grand Ole Opry. This was the first place they played together as a group and for more than 10 years they have delivered great performances on that stage. However, on 3 October, after finishing a three-song set, Reba McEntire came from the side of the stage and asked the group if they would like to become part of the Grand Ole Opry group. According to the president and general manager, Pete Fisher, it was a long time coming. Over the years they have grown so much and their commitment to the organization has never been questioned. Their induction on 17 October was led by Little Jimmy Dickens and Vince Gill.

A couple of days later they gave one of their most memorable performances when they joined Jimmy Fallon the Tonight Show. With the house band, the Roots, they sang “Stay All Night” and everyone who saw it probably wished that Little Big Town could stay all night. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Country, the group admitted that a big part of their edge comes from their producer, Jay Joyce. He pushes them to try things they wouldn’t ordinarily try and they have dubbed him the rock & roll guru.

A little later on the group got another big surprise in the form of a CMA award. After giving a show-stopping performance and participated in a very unconventional duet with pop star Ariana Grande, they received the vocal group of the year award. This was also the third time in a row they raked in this award.

The last single they dropped off the “Pain Killer” album is “Girl Crush”. Many are saying that it’s their best song ever. The band itself told fans that they should prepare themselves for something a little different and this is exactly what “Girl Crush” represents. It has been described as sexy and simple while other praise it for the original lyrics. The ability to create something new, especially when it seems like everything’s been done already, is no small feat.
