Girl In A Country Song – Maddie & Tae

November 27, 2014 By NashStar

Maddie & Tae is the new country duo that has popped onto the scene with nothing short of a bang. Brought together when they were 15 years old, they have been singing together ever since. Both are gifted with star quality, musical talent and entertaining expression. Their debut single was released in July and it’s called “Girl in a Country Song”. Apart from being fun and exciting, it takes a humorous look at bro-country music while empowering the role of women.

If you’ve heard the song on the radio and thought it was fun, then you’ll love the video. It starts out very ditsy and typical, with guys whistling at two pretty girls in short jeans and bikini tops. In slow motion they walk down a dirt road while Maddie & Tie sing with a very “matter of fact” kind of attitude. After flipping a “role-reversal” switch the fun really starts. Instead of seeing two pretty girls coming down the dirt road, there are three guys. But instead of looking strong and sexy they take on the roles that pretty girls would normally play.

One would think that a cute couple of country singers like Maddie & Tae would debut with a video filled with glamour and great visuals. But director TK McKamy made the better choice and kept it simple, placing more focus on the new country stars rather than overshadow them with unnecessary special effects. Cutting between three main scenes where the duo is enjoying an outdoor party, writing songs in their room and playing guitar on the back of two pick-up trucks gave room to emphasize the message. In between there are shots where the guys try to look sexy and the only natural reaction to this is laughing.

The birth of the song itself has an interesting story behind it. Apparently Maddie & Tae were on their way to a songwriting session when the idea came to mind. In the car they were listening to country radio, which is somewhat of a daily tradition. They also discovered that a lot of the guys that were singing had similar lyrics in terms of women. Then and there they decided to make a list of all the lyrics they heard which objectify women in some way or another. Make no mistake; it was all in good spirit and for the girls it was a fun experience. All they wanted to do is give a voice to the girls that appear in the songs while poking some fun at bro-country stars.

As expected, the video went viral very quickly. This doesn’t come as a surprise because it brings something original to the country music scene. Instead of making a typical debut they settled on something a little more controversial. Just to be clear, Maddie &Tae have nothing against bro-country singers. In fact, they stated in an interview that they love listening to them on a daily basis. However, they did think it would be a good idea to show the world how silly some of their videos and lyrics can be. Well, they have definitely made their point and everyone is enjoying it, even the bro-country stars.

Marshall always had the knack of getting just the right people for his videos.

randy-dorman-guitar

The consummate guitarist and showman.

Randy Dorman As for the guitarist, none other could be better than producer and actual accomplished guitarist, Randy Dorman.  He never missed a note and plays the part perfectly with the ability to support Marshall, while only drawing attention to himself at just the right times with dramatic actions.

True love has no age..

Mary and Raymond Stevenson Marshall had a very close relationship with his mother.  He called her at 7 o’clock every morning.  Known for her baked goods, a constant blue ribbon winner, Marshall wrote a song about her on for his first album, Against The Law,  called Miss Mary (The Bakin’ Machine).  “Mamma Law” as she was also proudly known, appeared in his very first video pointing her finger at him in a scolding way – which he often needed.

The “Happy Hatters”

Marshall’s father was a preacher (making Marshall a “PK”, yep!) who passed away of lung cancer before Marshall recorded his first album. His mother later married Raymond Stevenson.  The two started out as “fishing buddies.”  Raymond was a perfect gentlemen and Marshall was so happy for his mother!  Liking Raymond so much, Marshall asked if he could call him dad – Raymond was flattered and happy with that.  Sadly, Raymond passed away June 3, 2013, just months after Marshall.

This smile is worth a million!

Taylor Bugos It was known to all that Marshall had a real fondness for the “ladies” for himself or as “eye candy”.  The beautiful brunette, Taylor Bugos, made her first appearance with Marshall on the cover of his last album Anything For You.  It took this video to finally work her face into the act.  Taylor recently got the lead role in My Many Sons, as the daughter of famed college basketball coach, Don Meyer.

tina

Watch it Marshall!

Tina? As for the attractive blond that plays Marshall’s love interest in the video, Marshall had this footage shot himself and it actually never came up who she is.  We have some clues and would love to give her credit.  Her first name is believed to be Tina.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

noah-maddie-brewer

This is real acting!

Noah and Maddie Brewer On stage and in videos, kids (and animals – sometimes one in the same) tend to steal the show, especially when they’re as cute as the two in the Anything For You video.  The two kids are Noah and Maddie Brewer, the grand children of proud grandparents Ann & Randy Dorman. Off camera it took many takes to get that scene just right, plus a half packet of Jolly Ranchers to get Noah to kiss his little sister…

How it came to be…

Robert MacDonald and Marshall Law (both a little too serious…)

Upon hearing the song from Marshall, friend and director MacDonald fell in love with it.  He offered Marshall a music video of the song to appear exclusively on NSV.  Marshall was excited about the opportunity and agreed.  Coincidently, it was right around the time NSV was shooting a mini Western/Music Video starring Marshall.  As a side note, the Western/Music Video is in post production and will be released at the beginning of the year.

Director MacDonald recalls events surrounding the video:

I am not sure where the concept came from?  It was much like a songwriter describing a song that just flowed out “writing itself.”  I liked the song immediately and still never get tired of hearing it.  Randy’s (Dorman) guitar playing and production is perfect too!  Many producers may have tried to  “over produce” a song like this, but Randy nailed it with inspirational guitar playing that complimented Marshall’s soulful “bare vocals” – no backup singers.

…I knew it needed a video.  In listening to the song, I just started imagining things, making torches, seeing visions in my head, and so forth listening to the song over and over.  The idea came up to shoot it at Randy and Annie’s “Scenic Ridge” which worked perfectly.

Marshall is just making his appearance.

No more than a day before the shoot, maybe even on the way there, I had this idea where Marshall would appear and reappear in various places in the scene.  I staged and shot portions of the video this way to edit for this effect later.  It occurs in various spots, but you can see this in the beginning when Marshall makes his opening appearance.

Now, with Marshall’s passing,  it seems a little eery, at least to me, as if his spirit walks in and out of the video. Artistically, this makes sense because his spirit clearly is in the video…

The Future of Marshall’s Music and Videos

Prior to his passing, Marshall gave the mechanical rights (right to reproduce) to all his music, with the exception of his final Album, to Robert MacDonald, requesting his music be continued.

Marshall also wanted producer Randy Dorman who produced Marshall’s last album Anything For You, and MacDonald to partner on a Best of Marshall Law album using songs from all albums.

In keeping with that spirit, Marshall’s first Album: Against The Law, which is rare and long out of print, has been digitally remastered and is available now.  $5.99.

The other albums, singles, and The Best of Marshall Law will follow over time.

To all who knew him, or spent time around him, know what a friend he was to cameras (probably even more so than to the ladies). Therefore, it should come as no surprise that in the vaults of VMI resides a wealth of never before seen footage, including live concert performances, music videos, and bloopers which will eventually all make their way here on NSV, as well as seeing him in his starring role as who else but “the Marshall” in the Nashville StarVision Western short movie/music video to be released early next year.

Happy Birthday Marshall!

God bless you Kenny…

Something Bad – Miranda Lambert ft. Carrie Underwood

August 22, 2014 By NashStar

Something Bad was not so bad for singers Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood as it hit number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs.  This scores Miranda with 5 number ones and Carrie with 13.  Somethin’ Bad was the first time in over 20 years that two solo women artists had a number 1.  Way to go ladies!

miranda-lambert-carrie-underwood-something-badTwo words come to mind when hearing the song “Somethin’ Bad” and that is “Girl Power”. It’s been two decades since a single by two solo female artists has reached the number one spot on the “Billboards – Hot Country Songs”, meaning that the collaboration between Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood is something to look out for. It’s a refreshing, in-your-face anthem for women all over the world and it’s performed by two very talented country singers.

You can pause Nashville StarVision Radio streaming at the top of page.

The individuals responsible for writing the song are Chris DeStefano, Brett James and Priscilla Renea. This was done while at a retreat in France and initially it was intended as a male/female duet. However, changes were made in order for Carrie and Miranda to sing it. One can describe it as the female version of the bro-country genre and it speaks to unity among women. Overall the critics have received the release with great optimism and “anthem” was a common word among them. The most impressive aspect of the song is the power both Miranda and Carrie puts into it. It carries an amazing energy and the combination between the two is hypnotic.miranda-carrie-close-up

“Somethin’ Bad” features on the fifth studio album by Miranda called “Platinum” and was released as the second single two weeks before the album hit the stores. The duo performed it for the first time at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards on 18 May and the next day people were able to buy it. Neither Carrie nor Miranda is new to the country music scene. Since winning the 2005 American Idol competition, Carrie has broken several records in her career. For many she is the queen of country, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Her vocal ability is staggering, seeing as there isn’t a note this girl cannot sing. As for Carrie, she is a little powerhouse herself. Her approach is a little more edgy than Underwood, but together they reach the pinnacle of perfection.

For those fans who don’t know, both Carrie and Miranda are 30 years old and both released their debut albums in 2005. They also share the experience of having multiple number one hits and “Somethin’ Bad” recently joined them. When Miranda heard the song for the first time she knew it was going to be great. She also knew it was the perfect song to sing with Carrie. For some time now they wanted to perform a song together and Miranda didn’t waste any time in contacting Carrie. As a result, country music has received a new girl anthem driven by a fearless beat.

Tray Fanjoy is responsible for the video, which was released in late June. He presents the video as a trailer for a movie and used Belle Boyd and Priscilla Parker as the jewel thief characters for the sexy singers. In the “trailer” they ride on motorbikes, partake in jewel heists and play poker. The song peaked at number 1 on the Hot Country Songs Billboard and 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Fans can expect to hear it for a while, because it’s just that good. Hopefully it will spark another powerful collaboration between these two country stars.
